The exhaust coming out of the
tailpipe of the nearly 2,500 school buses in central Ohio not only looks and
smells bad—it’s bad for your kids.
Diesel engines spew out a multitude of dangerous air pollutants, which affect
public health, degrade the environment and compromise our community’s ability to
meet federal clean air standards. These harmful pollutants cause particle
pollution and ozone pollution, as well as air toxins and smog-forming pollution.
Health officials link exposure to diesel exhaust to a compromised immune system,
aggravated asthma and allergy symptoms, heart and lung disease, and even
premature deaths.
A study published in the April 15th issue of Environmental Science and
Technology Journal reveals that children riding in diesel powered school buses
are exposed to larger amounts of pollution inside the bus than outside.
Researchers found that in a single day, on average, a child riding a school bus
is likely to breathe in seven to 70 times more exhaust from the bus when
compared to the school bus emissions a resident is likely to inhale in an urban
area. To view an abstract of the study,

The urgency is real and the time is now. We can no longer sit and wait for
proactive measures to be taken when it comes to the health of our children. This
Adopt-A-School-Bus Program is one of a handful across the country, and the first
in Ohio. This program was created to help fund local school districts in their
efforts to retrofit (clean up) buses. Because of the lack of funding for such an
endeavor, this initiative will allow local businesses to get involved in such a
unique investment—with real results at stake: our children.
