Wetlands

WetlandsWetlands are the lands between land and water. These unique ecosystems provide habitat for hundreds of species such as fairy shrimp, various frogs and salamanders, turtles, bald eagles, and more!

While most of Ohio used to be wetlands, only 10% remains, and these too are under threat from development and other factors.

OEC’s wetland program focuses on educating the public on vernal pools, fighting for strong protections at the Statehouse and commenting on poorly planned developments.

Vernal Pools

Vernal pools are miniature, fascinatingly complex and fragile worlds, with all of their drama played out in a few months every year close to our homes, and yet most of us have never witnessed them.

Read more about OEC's Vernal Pool Monitoring Program.

Fighting for strong wetlands protections

OEC participates in the Ohio EPA’s Wetland Ecology Group to urge the Agency to adopt strong wetlands protections based on sound science.

OEC’s Citizen’s Guide to 401’s

Sections 404 and 401 of the Clean Water Act govern the filling of wetlands. For tips on how to participate in the permitting process and information on what the regulations require the Ohio EPA to consider, take a look at our Citizen’s Guide to 401’s.
