Vernal Pool Workshops
Northeast Ohio
On a snowy Saturday morning, April 17, at the historic (built by the Civilian Conservation Corp) Brushwood Pavilion in Richfield Ohio, the OEC held its Northeast Ohio Vernal Pool Workshop. The evaluations gave the workshop two thumbs up!
Presentations ranged from using the latest GIS technology to find a vernal pool (Mick Micacchion, Ohio EPA), to local efforts (Mike Johnson, Summit County MetroParks; Mike McNutt, Tinker's Creek Watershed Coordinator), to creatures of the pool (John Katko, Friends of Wetlands), to state wide conservation efforts (David R. Celebrezze, Ohio Environmental Council).
Nearly 50 participants were treated to a trip to a vernal pool not more than ten minutes away. In the pool we viewed wood frog egg masses, spotted salamander egg masses and a host of macroinvertebrates.

Thanks to all who presented and attended - you made it a success!

Central Ohio
The OEC's Vernal Pool Workship in Central Ohio on March 6 was a smashing success!
Nearly 70 people filled up the Beech-Maple Lodge at Blacklick MetroPark to learn from experts about the importance of vernal pools and how to protect these special places.
Participants watched presentations, checked out the latest technology such as GIS mapping, and learned about local and state efforts to protect vernal pools. We also took a trip to nearby pool, where we were able to break through the ice and see a few macroinvertebrates swimming in the icy waters!
Special thanks to our presenters:
- Mick Micacchion, Ohio EPA
- John Katko, Friends of Wetlands
- John Watts, Franklin County MetroParks
- Kurt Keljo and Bill Resch, Friends of Big Walnut Creek and Rocky Fork/Blacklick Tributaries
- David Reutter, Franklin Soil & Water Conservation District
