Ohio Environmental Council

Diesel Clean Up Program - Student Volunteer

OEC Diesel Program Overview

In the US, more than 11 million diesel engines build our nation's infrastructure and transport goods and people. However, particulate pollution from diesels shortens the lives of an estimated 21,000 people each year.

The OEC takes on diesel pollution in a number of ways. We promote the "6Rs" of diesel clean-up:

  1. Refuel - switch to cleaner fuel, such as ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel
  2. Repower - install a new, low-emission engine in an older chassis
  3. Replace - replace older equipment with new, lower-emission models
  4. Rebuild or repair - perform routine maintenance and periodic engine rebuilds to keep emission rates at or near original levels
  5. Reduce idling - limiting idle time reduces fuel usage and reduces wear and tear on the engine
  6. Retrofit - on still useful equipment, retrofitting with a diesel emission control device helps to control emissions.

The OEC also has worked with Senator George Voinovich and a diverse stakeholder group to develop the Diesel Emissions Reduction Act of 2005 (DERA), which established voluntary national and state level grant and loan programs to promote the reduction of diesel emissions. We also are working on a statewide campaign to focus on cleaning up diesel emissions at the local level. Our work in Stark County has been particularly successful in cleaning up emissions from school district and municipal diesel fleets, and now serves as a model for implementation across the state.

Diesel Program Volunteer Responsibilities

Interns will assist with obtaining information on fleets that were awarded Diesel Emission Reduction Grants (DERG). Specifically, compiling information on fleets that have an idle-reduction policy and fleets that can share with the OEC how much fuel and money they save on a monthly basis.

Time Commitment: Subject to volunteer schedule – 10-15 hours per week

Schedule: Subject to volunteer schedule

The successful candidate will:

1. Work closely with Buckeye Forest Council Board and staff in the development and refinement of objectives, specific activities and educational materials. Specifically consultant/employee will:

  • Help BFC leadership to craft and begin to implement a yearlong campaign to slow the freight train of biomass support and plant approvals and begin to implement a fact-based public education campaign.

• Ohio Consumers Council;
• Ohio Farm Bureau;

• Appropriate state and federal legislators;
• Appropriate state and federal regulators and
• Emerging state, regional and national partners.

3. Attend meetings of these groups and participate as BFC spokesperson on the biomass issue.
