The Ohio Environmental Council (OEC), one of the nation’s premier state environmental advocacy non-profit organizations, is seeking an experienced leader to serve as the Senior Policy Director.
The position: The Senior Policy Director’s primary responsibilities are the direct supervision of seven top-notch policy staff and the coordination of the OEC’s policy and outreach efforts on a broad range of air, land and water issues. The Senior Policy Director reports directly to the Executive Director and serves as the staff liaison to the Board of Director’s Strategic Planning Committee. The Senior Policy Director will provide direct supervision, monthly work plan oversight, and annual evaluations to policy staff, will develop leadership qualities in the staff, and will ensure training and mentoring opportunities for the staff. The Senior Policy Director will develop long-term campaign strategies and build close coordination amongst programs. The Senior Policy Director also will be responsible for managing foundation grants in collaboration with the policy staff, including identifying funding sources, creating proposals, overseeing budgets, building relationships with foundation staff, and complying with all grant reporting requirements.

The OEC is a statewide environmental advocacy group with a full-time staff of 15 and an annual budget of $1 million plus, with over three quarters of the budget coming from foundation grants and the rest from private donors. Qualifications: The Senior Policy Director must possess strong leadership qualities and have experience in the direct supervision of employees. Experience in non-profit management and environmental policy is strongly preferred. The Senior Policy Director should have proven ability to manage and motivate a multi-person staff, create and implement long range plans, and work well with a diverse array of employees, colleagues, Board members, and outside partners. The Senior Policy Director should have substantial experience in a demanding work environment, and good communication and team-building skills. The Senior Policy Director must possess the willingness and ability to travel and occasionally work evening and weekend hours, strong writing and speaking skills, and proficiency in word processing and use of the Internet. The minimum educational qualifications include graduation from a recognized college or university with a Bachelors Degree. An advanced degree with specialization in environment, natural resources, nonprofit management, or public administration is preferred. Knowledge of Ohio—environmental and economic issues, natural history, and politics—is highly desirable.

The position: The Membership Director works with Director of Development for aggressive growth of the Ohio Environmental Council’s membership of individuals and nonprofit organizations.
- Responsible for preparing annual membership development plan, including analysis and evaluation of past membership development efforts. Closely work with the entire Board and staff to implement goals. Integrate fundraising and networking opportunities presented to Board and staff through their programmatic outreach efforts.
- Significantly grow OEC’s individual membership program. Evaluate, perform, and improve current tactics including mailings, calling, speaking engagements, online organizing, workplace giving, and events. Research, implement, and evaluate new tactics. Improve print and online membership communications. Respond to member inquiries.
- Build OEC’s nonprofit membership program. Evaluate the membership benefits offered to nonprofit organizations. Develop and execute a recruitment strategy involving Board and staff.
- Organize, assist, and attend fundraising and non-fundraising events including nature tours, house parties, and the OEC’s annual banquet. Responsible for acquiring auction items for annual banquet.

Qualifications: The Membership Director must possess passion for environmental protection, strong leadership qualities, and demonstrated success in nonprofit fundraising, communications, advocacy, or sales. Experience with nonprofit membership is highly preferred. Bachelors degree required. Excellent written and oral communication skills are required. Director should have proficiency with technology, including use of the internet and databases, strong organizational skills, and must pay attention to detail. Should be able to travel throughout Ohio and occasionally work evening and weekend hours.

General Description: The Administrative Assistant provides clerical support to program, development, and administrative staff.
Qualifications: The minimum education qualification shall include graduation from a recognized technical program with an Associate Degree or similar training and at least one year of administrative experience. Professional Responsibilities:
1) Administration— Assist with the overall administrative needs of the organization.
a) Answer the phone and greet visitors.

d) Coordinate and maintain press clipping, photo, video, newsletter, and publications morgue.

2) Membership

Project Descriptions: Biological assessment of fish assemblages using standardized pulsed D.C. electrofishing methods; also oversee a crew conducting macroinvertebrate, algal, and qualitative and quantitative habitat assessments and limited water sample collections. For most projects, extended overnight travel is required consisting of multiple days and weeks; travel costs are covered both directly and via reimbursement.
Position Description : Field Crew Leader – Leads a 5-6 person field crew responsible for collecting fish, algal, and/or macroinvertebrate assemblage data in wadeable streams and non-wadeable rivers. Must be able to identify fish to species in each survey area and locale. Must be able to execute required methods and quality assurance practices and be capable of safely operating electrofishing gear in wadeable streams and non-wadeable rivers; must also be able to safely operate 4WD trucks and boats with outboard motors. Responsible for carrying out a detailed plan of study, conduct functional supervision of all crew members, and be responsible for care and maintenance of all sampling gear and vehicles. Must be knowledgeable and skilled with watercraft, 4-wheel drive vehicles, and care and maintenance of all sampling gear; responsible for collection and custody of data including data sheets and ancillary forms and information. Data analysis responsibilities will vary by project. For certain projects, crews will travel for extended periods of up to three weeks. Position appointments are temporary and for not more than 12 months beginning in May or June 2008. There is a potential for rehiring on multiple-year projects. Payment is on a salary basis from $2500 - 3000/month, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Benefit options are available and are in addition to the salary terms.

Project Descriptions : Biological assessment of fish, macroinvertebrate, and/or algal assemblages using standardized methods; qualitative and quantitative habitat assessment; field parameters and water sample collection. Extended (>12-20 consecutive days) overnight travel is required with travel costs covered by MBI.
Position Description : Field Technician 1: Works as a member of a 3-4 person field crew that collects fish, macroinvertebrate, and/or algal assemblage and habitat data in wadeable streams and boatable rivers. Responsible for the execution of specific sampling, data recording, and equipment operation and maintenance tasks under the direction of a qualified full time crew leader. Must be able to assist in the operation of wading and boat mounted sampling gear, macroinvertebrate samples, other biological samples, and in-field or laboratory sorting of samples. For some projects, crews may travel over extended periods including weekends. Most projects are operated out of the MBI field facility near Circleville, Ohio. Positions are temporary and for not more than 18-20 consecutive weeks beginning in May - June 2008; extensions may be granted in specific instances. Payment is on a salary basis ranging from $1450-1850/month depending on level of education completed, experience, and qualifications. Employment with MBI is “at will”.
Baseline Skills Required: Ability to perform field sampling and work variable schedules including irregular hours and extended overnight travel including weekends. Experience working around water is desirable.
