Photo Contest

To commemorate the natural beauty of Ohio, we invite all Ohioans age 13 and older to submit their best photographs for the OEC's 3rd Annual Nature Photo Contest.

CATEGORIES

There are two entry categories. You may enter up to 3 photographs in either category (total of 6).

  1. My Ohio
  2. What "Green" Means to Me

There is no fee to submit entries.

The deadline for entry is August 31, 2011. (Read complete photo contest rules.)

PRIZES

There will be a total of seven contest winners. One Grand Prize winner and two Runners-Up in each category, plus a Fan Favorite.

Judges will designate Merit Awards to photos at their discretion. All Merit Award photos will be eligible for the Fan Favorite award, voted on by OEC's fans on Facebook.

  • The two Grand Prize winners will each win a one-year membership to the Ohio Environmental Council and two tickets each to the Ohio Environmental Council's Green Gala 2011 on October 22.

  • The four Runners-Up will each win a one-year membership to the Ohio Environmental Council and one ticket each to the Green Gala 2011.
  • Winning photographs will be displayed at the Green Gala 2011.

  • Winning photographs and photographers will be showcased on the OEC website and in publicity materials.

All photos entered into the OEC's Nature Photo Contest will be used by the Ohio Environmental Council at their discretion in perpetuity including print and promotional materials and the OEC website.

The OEC will give proper photo credit whenever a photo is used. Entrants retain ownership and all other rights to future use of their photographs.

ENTRY FORMS

CRITERIA

  • Photographers should submit only their best work to be judged.
  • The two categories are "My Ohio," and "What 'Green' Means to Me." You may interpret these themes however you wish.
  • The subject(s) in the photograph must be physically located within the state of Ohio.
  • The photo must contain some element of nature in them, i.e. the photo can be of buildings and Ohio's built environment, but it must also include some element of Ohio's natural state as well.
  • Photographs will be judged on originality, technical excellence, artistic merit, and how well they embody the theme of the category entered. All decisions by the judges will be final and binding.
  • Color and black/white photos are both accepted.

RULES

  • Photos should have been taken no earlier than January 1, 2010.
  • You may NOT submit any photograph that has been previously submitted to an OEC photo contest
  • Only digital photos will be considered for this contest.
  • All photographers must be Ohio residents aged 13 and older.
  • All photographers must complete and sign the Entry Form & Waiver.
  • Photographers under the age of 18 MUST have a parent or guardian sign the Entry Form & Waiver.
  • There is no fee to submit photos.
  • Each photographer may submit up to 6 photos – no more than 3 in either category.
  • All photos submitted must be high-resolution (300 dpi or higher) jpg or tiff file formats. Each photo file should not exceed 3mb in size.
  • The contest will run from July 1, 2011, through August 31, 2011.
  • Entries must be received by mail or e-mail by 11:59 p.m. EST on August 31, 2011. The OEC takes no responsibility for hardware/software malfunctions or postal problems that delay a submission.
  • Professional photographers (persons earning more than 50 percent of their income from photography) must declare so on the Entry Form & Waiver and include a publication rights release with their photos.
  • Ohio Environmental Council employees, members of the OEC’'s Board of Directors, and their families are not eligible to enter the photo contest.
  • Subject Consent - Does your photograph(s) include people that are recognizable? Could they recognize themselves if they viewed the photo? If so, every individual in your photograph(s) needs to provide consent by signing the Consent Form.

Digital Alterations: All photographs should accurately reflect the subject matter and the scene as it appeared. Photos that have been digitally altered beyond standard optimization will be disqualified. Acceptable are adjustments to color, contrast, brightness and sharpness; removal of dust and scratches; cropping; black and white conversions; and use of HDMI (high dynamic range imaging), where multiple exposures of the same scene are combined for a greater tonal range. Not acceptable are photo composites (combination of two or more photos, not of the same scene); the addition, duplication, deletion or moving of objects in the photos; or the use of artistic digital filters and effects. Examples of artistic filters and effects are watercolor, neon glow, posterizing, stained glass, and others which do not show the scene in its natural way. (Courtesy of National Wildlife Federation)

HOW TO SUBMIT

  • Entry Form & Waiver - complete and sign one for each photo entered.
  • Consent Forms - complete and sign one for each photo entered that includes people.
  • Name each photo with a title and your last name.
  • Submit publication rights release (if applicable).

By Mail

Burn photo(s) onto a CD. Label CD clearly with your name, contact information, and number of photos on disc.
