Thousands of kids are breathing a little
easier on their bus rides to school this year. That’s
because dozens of school buses have been outfitted with
state-of-the art diesel particulate filters. Particulate
pollution---also known as soot--- can penetrate deep in
the lungs and can trigger breathing ailments and heart attacks.
Health officials link soot pollution to thousands of deaths
each year across the country. The diesel particulate filters,
when paired with ultra low-sulfur fuel, reduces diesel pollution
emissions by up to 90%!
The OEC has partnered with local school
districts to help develop plans and secure over $1 million
in funding to retrofit over 160 school buses in central
Ohio with diesel pollution filters. The OEC’s diesel
school bus program improves local air quality, assists cash-strapped
schools, and benefits public health—primarily school
children that are exposed to elevated levels of diesel particulate
pollution. Learn more about the OEC’s
Clean School Bus Program.
