Eric Fitch remembers the OEC - eight years of positive environmental change

Upon leaving the OEC Board at the beginning of 2008, Dr. Eric Fitch, associate professor of environmental science at Marietta College and associate editor of the American Water Resources Association Journal, says:

“For the past eight years, I was heavily involved in citizen environmental action with the OEC. During this time, I have seen major gains in air, land, and water cleanup. Here in the Ohio River Valley, air quality has been improved as AEP and other generators have finally started to clean up some of their emissions, though there is much to do. New standards for Ohio River quality and Lake Erie water quality are getting more attention.

Vernal pools, wetlands, and pocket prairies are being restored and protected throughout the state. The Cuyahoga River Valley is now a place of recreation. Battles beyond our borders such as climate change and biodiversity preservation are getting addressed. Are all the battles won? Not yet! We protect our citizens from far fewer contaminants in our food, water, and air than does the European Union. The powers that be allow or foster the destruction of entire landscapes for short-term profit. There are more things to be fought to protect in nature than can be addressed in any lifetime!

Thankfully, they are battles that are well worth the fight, and we will all see the OEC continue to take a key leadership position in securing a healthier environment for Ohio’s families and communities.“
